What Is an RFID and IoT Platform, and Why Does It Matter?
Tags and readers only collect data. A platform turns reads into events, workflows and integrations.
Tags, readers and sensors collect signals. On their own they do not tell you what happened or what to do next. A platform is the software layer that turns raw reads into useful business information.
What a platform does
- Manages devices, tags and users: only registered readers, tags and people can operate in the system.
- Turns reads into events: a series of tag reads becomes a movement, a location change or an exception.
- Automates workflows: rules send alerts, open tasks and request approvals when events happen.
- Connects to other systems: clean events flow to ERP, WMS, CMMS and BI tools through APIs.
- Supports many technologies: RFID, NFC, QR codes, barcodes, IoT sensors and GPS feed the same engine.
Why it matters
One system instead of many. Without a platform, each project ends up with its own software and data. With one, new solutions are added as modules on the same devices, users and data.
Hardware freedom. A hardware-agnostic platform lets you choose devices on merit and mix manufacturers.
Control and audit. Central authorisation and a record of events make governance simpler.
What to ask when you evaluate one
- Which device types and manufacturers does it support?
- How does it integrate with our ERP and other systems?
- Can it run in the cloud, on our servers or both?
- Can we start with one use case and add more later?
